How QuickWhere Determines Your Current Location
QuickWhere determines your current city, county, state, ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA), time zone, and GPS coordinates by combining your browser’s W3C Geolocation API reading with official U.S. Census Bureau boundary services. When you tap Use my location, your device reads its latitude, longitude, and horizontal accuracy radius from GPS satellites, nearby Wi-Fi access points, or cellular towers, and matches that coordinate against current federal jurisdiction polygons.
What Each Row in Your Location Summary Means
- City or Place: Shows the incorporated municipality (city, town, village, or borough) from U.S. Census Bureau Incorporated Places (Layer 28), or the Census Designated Place (Layer 30) and county subdivision when you are in an unincorporated area.
- County and 5-Digit FIPS Code: Identifies the county, Louisiana parish, Alaska borough or census area, Connecticut planning region, or independent city from the Census Bureau’s current county boundary layer, along with its 5-digit federal GEOID and boundary proximity check.
- State and Territory: Reports the U.S. state, District of Columbia, or U.S. territory along with its two-letter postal abbreviation, state capital, and statutory time zone rules.
- ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA): Queries the 2020 Census ZCTA boundary layer for GPS points or extracts the exact USPS delivery ZIP Code when you enter a street address, and lists every county that shares land area with that ZIP Code.
- Time Zone and Live Offset: Reads your IANA time zone identifier, current UTC offset, and Daylight Saving Time status, cross-checked against U.S. Department of Transportation (NTAD) time zone boundaries.
- GPS Coordinates: Displays your WGS84 latitude and longitude in both signed decimal degrees (DD) and degrees-minutes-seconds (DMS) with one-tap copy and a live boundary map.
Data Sources and Accuracy Limitations
Smartphones and laptops with GPS clear of tall buildings typically report positions within 5 to 30 meters (16 to 100 feet), while desktop browsers using IP or Wi-Fi triangulation may have a larger uncertainty radius. QuickWhere automatically checks whether another county boundary falls inside your device’s accuracy circle and warns you whenever a street-address lookup is safer for tax, court, or voter forms.
